Should I See A Doctor Before Starting Exercise

Pre exercise physical exam

Firstly, congratulations on your first steps towards weight loss and improving your health.

As part of the steps to weight loss we will be reviewing  diet and the addition of movement (and dare I say it,  exercise) into your lifestyle.

Before you start out tho it’s really important to make sure you do not have any medical problems that exercise might make worse.

I always recommend seeing your family doctor before starting exercise, especially if you are in any of  the following groups.

  • Over 40 years old
  • Diabetic
  • Asthmatic
  • If you have high blood pressure or heart disease
  • If someone in your family has heart disease  or has suddenly died unexpectedly
  • if your waist measurement is more then 100cm (40″)
  • If you are taking any medicines prescribed by a doctor or naturopath or taking any medicines sold over the counter
  • And finally if it’s been a long time since you have exercised.

If you are in any of the groups mentioned it’s vital to see your family doctor for a check up before you make any major changes to you lifestyle, diet or starting exercise.

To help make it easier I have created a simple sheet you can fill out and give to your doctor. I’ve also included some suggested screening blood tests and the current guideline for heart assessments from the American Heart Association that your doctor may find useful.

This will help your doctor check you are ready and free from any ailments that may prevent the start of your exercise.

The first page is for you to fill out and share with your doctor.
